They are described as an indigenous Tibetan-related community of Boyu Village in Zhugqu County, Gansu, distinguished from neighboring Tibetans by its language and ceremonial dress They are an Indigenous people, with Tibetan as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Tibetan people cluster of the Tibetan Peoples. They mostly adhere to Chinese Folk Religion and Tibetan is their primary language.
