The Sayyid (Syed, Saiyad, Sayyad) hold the foremost position among the four classes of Muslims in general: Sayyid, Sheikh, Mughal and Pathan. The Sayyid are widely distributed across northern India, with concentrations in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
