Overview: The Susu are a major Mande ethnic group living primarily in Guinea. Smaller communities are located in the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau. The Susu live in farming villages along the marshy coastal plain. They converted to Islam in the 17th century. Today, the Susu are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims of the Maliki school, although their religion retains a number of pre-Islamic indigenous practices.
