Overview: The Songhai are west Africans who speak one of eight Songhai languages. The Songhai Empire dominated the western Sahel in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Sahel is a geographic zone of transition between the Sahara desert in the North and the Sudanian Savannas in the South. The Sahel stretches across the entire African continent. The Western Sahel crosses portions of Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo. Sunni Islam is the primary religion among these Songhai people groups.
