Overview: Sumatra is an island in western Indonesia--the sixth largest island in the world--home to more than 50 million people. The Pasemah Plateau that runs some 70 kilometers through the Pasemah Highlands has numerous archeological sites with relics dating to 100 AD. The Pasemah people are believed to have originated in Borneo before migrating to Sumatra and the Pasemah Plateau. The Pasemah of Sumatra people cluster encompasses the Pasemah and several related ethnic groups that speak Central Malay and practice Sunni Islam. Most live in small farming villages of less than 1000 people.
