Overview: The Kurds are a mountain people with a history extending back many millennia. They are the descendants of many different peoples, but notably the Hurrians, Medes and Scythians. The geographical distribution of their languages and widely differing dialects reflects their complexity. There are four main languages, but dozens of recognized ethnic subgroups.
