Overview: The Koreans have a long history, much of it relating to being a smaller nation fiercely trying to maintain its independence between two superpowers, China and Japan. The latter occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945. At Stalin's insistence, Korea was divided after the Second World War, which led to the destructive Korean War and continuing tensions between North and South Korea. Despite the significant political division, Koreans form a single ethnic group.
