Overview: The Aymara are a native ethnic group in the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America. They have existed in the Andes in what is now Western Bolivia, Southern Peru, and Northern Chile for hundreds of years. Before the Inca conquests of the 15th century and the Spanish conquest of the 16th century, there were several independent Aymara states with distinct Aymara dialects. Today there are three surviving Aymara languages.
