Overview: Sumatra is an island in western Indonesia--the sixth largest island in the world--home to more than 50 million people. The Minangkabau are an ethnic group indigenous to the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra. The Rejang are an ethnic group scattered along the southwest coast of Sumatra. These two groups and a few smaller groups native to the region comprise the Minangkabau-Rejang of Sumatra people cluster. Sunni Islam is practiced by most of these peoples.
