Overview: The Aztec are an ethnic group who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. "Aztec" (Aztecatl) is the Nahuatl word for "people from Aztlan", a mythological place for the Nahuatl-speaking culture of the time, and refers to all the various peoples who spoke the Nahuatl language. Aztec civilization flourished until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century and the Spanish settlement of Mexico City was founded on the site of the ruined Aztec capital.
