They are described as a Cariban people descended from the Karinya, historically dominant traders of Guyana's Mazaruni and Cuyuni river valleys, whose Venezuelan communities entered Spanish mission life before dispersing eastward after a mission's destruction in 1817 They are an Indigenous people, with Akawaio (Ingariko) as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the South American Indigenous people cluster of the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples. Their primary religion is Ethnoreligion. They primarily speak Akawaio.
