They are an occupational caste of Malayalam-speaking barbers and fisherfolk traditionally attached to the Arayan and Valan communities in Kerala's Alleppey, Ernakulam and Trichur districts. They are an Indigenous people in the Malayali people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Malayalam and their primary religion is Hinduism.
