The Savalakkarar of India

The Savalakkarar of India, numbering approximately 1,000 people, are Unengaged and Unreached. They are a small community of Coimbatore and Madurai districts, Tamil Nadu, descended from fishermen and musicians, their name recalling a sword or fishing knife called savalam. Farming and textile mill work remain their main occupations today. They are an Indigenous people in the Tamil people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Tamil and their primary religion is Hinduism.
