The Maila of India

The Maila of India, numbering approximately 2,600 people, are Unengaged and Unreached. They are a Scheduled Caste of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka and Kasaragod district in Kerala, their name recalling the Sanskrit for unclean. Hunting and fishing have given way to daily-wage labor and basket-making. They are an Indigenous people in the Other South Asian people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Tulu and their primary religion is Hinduism.
