They are an ethnolinguistic community of Tamil Nadu and Mysore plateau, speaking Kannada and Tamil, primarily engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry with complex exogamous clan divisions. They are an Indigenous people in the Kanarese people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Kannada and their primary religion is Hinduism.
