They are described as an ethnolinguistic community of Tamil Nadu and Mysore plateau, speaking Kannada and Tamil, primarily engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry with complex exogamous clan divisions.
They are an Indigenous people in the Kanarese people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Kannada is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
