They are a reform-oriented religious community centered on the concept of Satnam ("Truth"), strongly associated with Guru Ghasidas and Chhattisgarh, and historically committed to equality, social justice, and resistance to caste-based discrimination. They are an Indigenous people in the Hindi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Chhattisgarhi and their primary religion is Folk Hinduism.
