They are an ethno-religious subgroup of the Assamese, a socio-ethnic community whose identity is linked to the Assamese language and can also be known as - Assamese, Shaikh, Assamesse Muslims, Garia. They are an Indigenous people, in the Assamese people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Islam - Sunni. They primarily speak Assamese.
