The North Sumatran Malays of Indonesia, numbering approximately 2,710,000 people, are Engaged yet Unreached. They are a coastal Malay community of eastern North Sumatra whose identity emerged through the Islamization of local Karo and Simalungun populations and the development of a distinctive regional Malay culture. They mostly adhere to Sunni Islam and Malay (individual language) is their primary language.
