They are a Tanganyikan Bantu ethnolinguistic group indigenous to the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania They are an Indigenous people, in the Bantu, Central-Tanzania people cluster of the Sub-Saharan African Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Ethnoreligion. They primarily speak Matengo.
