They are a distinct ethnolinguistic subgroup of the De’ang people of China, part of the wider Palaung / Ta’ang family that extends across China, Myanmar, and Thailand. 德昂族 They are an Diaspora people, in the Mon-Khmer people cluster of the Southeast Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Buddhism - Mahayana. They primarily speak Palaung, Ruching.
