They are an endogamous landowning agricultural community concentrated in the West Champaran district of Bihar, who call themselves Chandel Chatri and trace their origins to migration from Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh. They speak Bhojpuri. They mostly adhere to Hinduism and Bhojpuri is their primary language.
