They are described as a people descended from enslaved Africans brought mainly from Mozambique and Madagascar to work Mauritius's plantation economy from 1715, who developed Morisyen creole in the 1700s, retaining Afro-Malagasy traditions in music, cuisine, and spirituality They are an Indigenous people, with Mauritian Creole as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Other Sub-Saharan African people cluster of the Sub-Saharan African Peoples. Their primary religion is Roman Catholicism. They primarily speak Morisyen.
