They are described as a once powerful kingdom in Sudan whose power was eclipsed by the rise of the Fur empire in the seventeenth century They are an Indigenous people, with Tungur / Tunjur as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Arab, Sudan people cluster of the Arab Peoples. Their primary religion is Sunni Islam. They primarily speak Arabic, Sudanese.
