They are a Scheduled Caste community of Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts in Kerala traditionally engaged in plucking coconuts and tapping toddy from palm trees. The Kanakkan are now mostly landless agricultural laborers. They mostly adhere to Hinduism and Malayalam is their primary language.
