They are a Scheduled Caste artisan community of bamboo workers whose name likely derives from bans, meaning bamboo. Concentrated in Bundelkhand across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, they traditionally earn their living by basket-making and drum-beating. They are an Indigenous people in the Hindi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Bundeli and their primary religion is Hinduism.
