They are an ethnoreligious people group indigenous to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan and can also be known as Hui, HuiZui, Dzhunyan, Tungan. They are an Indigenous people, in the Chinese-Hui people cluster of the East Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Islam - Sunni. They primarily speak Dungan.
