The Mitna of India

The Mitna of India, numbering approximately 20,000 people, are Unengaged and Unreached. They are described as a fishing and salt-making community of Maharashtra and Daman and Diu. The Mitna are an endogamous subdivision of the Machhi, their name meaning salt-maker in Gujarati. Fishing and salt-panning remain their primary occupations They are an Indigenous people, with Mitna as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Gujarati people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. They mostly adhere to Hinduism and Gujarati is their primary language.
