They are described as a linguistic subgroup of the Tats, an Iranian ethnic group predominantly found in the East Azerbaijan province of northern Iran They are an Indigenous people, with Central Tati (Shahrudi) as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Talysh people cluster of the Persian-Median Peoples. They mostly adhere to Shia Islam and Shahrudi is their primary language.
