They are a Totonacan-speaking farming people of Hidalgo's mountainous Huehuetla district, whose Nahuatl-derived name means people of the mountain, living amid Otomi and mestizo neighbors along the Hidalgo-Veracruz borderlands. They mostly adhere to Folk Catholicism and Huehuetla Tepehua is their primary language.
