They are an Indigenous tribal community (Adivasi) of central‑eastern India, recognized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) under the Indian Constitution. They are traditionally forest‑dwelling people, closely connected to land, forests, and agriculture and wage labor. They are an Indigenous people in the South Asian Tribal people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Bengali and their primary religion is Hinduism.
