The Valaiyar of India

The Valaiyar of India, numbering approximately 937,000 people, are Engaged yet Unreached. They are a coastal community of Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, also called Ambalakarar, their name recalling the fishing net valai. Fishing remains traditional, supplemented by work as fishing laborers abroad. They are an Indigenous people in the Tamil people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Tamil and their primary religion is Hinduism.
