They are described as an occupational caste of barbers from Maharashtra who speak Marathi and practice Hinduism, with traditional hair-dressing occupation and subgroups including Gujarati, Marawadi, and Telugu communities They are an Indigenous people, with Mahli (tribe) as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Munda-Santal people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Marathi.
