They are a caste community of cultivators and village watchmen from Bihar and West Bengal who speak Bengali, practice Hinduism, and are classified as a scheduled caste in West Bengal. They are an Indigenous people, in the Bihari people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Bengali.
