They are a traditional water‑service caste community of North India, closely associated with fishing, boating, and water‑carrying occupations. They are an Indigenous people in the Punjabi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Hindi and their primary religion is Hinduism.
