They are a caste‑based occupational group, found across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They are an Indigenous people, in the Dhobi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Folk Hinduism. They primarily speak Hindi.
