They are an ethnolinguisic subgroup of the Zapotec, an ethnic group indigenous to the state of Oaxaca, Mexico and can also be known as Santa María Quiegolani, Western Yautepec, Santa Maria Quiegolani, Quiegolani Zapotec; Western Yautepec Zapotec; Zapoteco de Santa María Quiegolani, Quiegolani Zapotec, Western Yautepec Zapotec, Western Yautepec Zapotec, Zapoteco, Quiegolani Zapotec, Zapoteco de Santa María Quiegolani, Zapoteco de Santa María Quiegolani, Zapotec. They are an Indigenous people, in the Zapotec people cluster of the Latin-Caribbean Americans affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Christianity - Folk Catholicism. They primarily speak Zapotec, Santa María Quiegolani.
