The Western Samadu of China, numbering approximately 10,500 people, are Unengaged and Unreached. They are described as a Yi-related people of western Yunnan descended from Ming-era Han military settlers who intermarried with local Yi communities and gradually developed a distinct Samadu identity They are an Indigenous people, with Samadu as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Other Tibeto-Burmese people cluster of the Tibetan Peoples. They mostly adhere to Chinese Folk Religion and Mandarin Chinese is their primary language.
