They are an indigenous community of Suriname; a dialect subgroup of Saramaccan (srm) and can also be known as Matoewari, Matawai, Matuari. They are an Indigenous people, in the Other Hispanic American people cluster of the Latin-Caribbean Americans affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Ethnoreligion - Animism. They primarily speak Saramaccan.
