They are a forest community of Nilambur in Malappuram district, Kerala, who migrated from Mysore forests centuries ago, their name meaning king of the foothills. Shifting cultivation and basketry now supplement hunting and gathering. They are an Indigenous people in the Malayali people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Malayalam and their primary religion is Hinduism.
