They are described as a territorial Rajput community of the Jammu hills whose name may derive from the region's name Dugar des or the Mundari word for hill, historically stratified into a ruling Mian class and a lower agriculturist Halbaha class They are an Indigenous people, with Dogra as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Punjabi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Dogri.
