They are described as a Gujarati Shaivite community named for the ten surnames among them, tracing descent from followers of Adi Sankara who became householders after his death, traditionally serving as minor priests at Shiva temples.
They are an Indigenous people in the Brahmin people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Gujarati is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
