They are described as a Tamil Nadu–based community with roots in Telugu-speaking Nayak groups, historically linked to military and administrative roles under the Vijayanagara Empire, and now integrated into the broader social and cultural landscape of South India.
They are an Indigenous people in the Tamil people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Tamil is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
