They are described as an ethnolinguistic people of southeastern Bangladesh whose identity is centered on the historic port city of Chattogram. Their Chittagonian language, maritime heritage, and trading networks shape a culturally distinctive regional Bengali community.
They are an Indigenous people in the Bengali people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Chittagonian is their primary language and Sunni Islam is their primary religion.
