They are described as an Indigenous tribal community (Adivasi) of central‑eastern India, recognized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) under the Indian Constitution. They are traditionally forest‑dwelling people, closely connected to land, forests, and agriculture and wage labor.
They are an Indigenous people in the South Asian Tribal people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Angika is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
