They are described as a caste community of agriculturists found throughout northern India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Kurmi have multiple territorial endogamous divisions, mainly speaking Hindi and practicing Hinduism.
They are an Indigenous people in the Kurmi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Hindi is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
