They are described as a community of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh whose name denotes prestige, traditionally serving as scribes and accountants akin to the Karnam. Cultivation has replaced their traditional revenue role.
They are an Indigenous people in the Odia people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Odia is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
