They are described as a caste community of cultivators and village watchmen from Bihar and West Bengal who speak Bengali, practice Hinduism, and are classified as a scheduled caste in West Bengal.
They are an Indigenous people in the Bihari people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Bengali is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
