They are a Muslim occupational community of Bihar whose name derives from cham or chamra, meaning animal hide, reflecting their traditional trade in procuring, dressing. They are an Indigenous people in the Urdu people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Urdu and their primary religion is Sunni Islam.
