They are described as a Hindu community of wandering devotional singers concentrated in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra who traditionally perform bhajans in return for alms. They trace their name and origin to Vasudeo, the father of Lord Krishna They are an Indigenous people, with Basudeva / Vasudev as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Hindi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Hindi.
